Simi Valley Education Foundation: Sustaining Educational Success

Occasionally I like to use the blog to highlight an organization that is doing good work on behalf of others in my community. My family and I love the community of Simi Valley and are proud residents. One local organization that is working hard to improve our community is the Simi Valley Education Foundation.

The Value of Education

According to the National Dropout Prevention Center,

“Graduating from high school will determine how well you live for the next 50 years of your life. High school graduates earn $143 more per week than high school dropouts. College graduates earn $336 more per week than high school graduates ($479 more per week than high school dropouts). Dropouts are more likely to apply for and receive public assistance than graduates of high school.”

Clearly, education is a major factor in future financial stability and success. As a community, Simi Valley places great value on educating our children and preparing them to be leaders in the future. Education is the bedrock of any community, providing support and resources for people at all stages of life.

Since being founded in 1989, the Simi Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) has been contributing to the value of education for Simi Valley children by improving their educational experience through more than $1 million in grants and scholarships. As a result of their efforts in support of our public schools, Simi Valley students consistently score above state and national averages on achievement tests, and approximately 80 percent attend college after graduation, according to the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The goal of the SVEF is to uphold quality education in Simi Valley, provide financial support for programs that will enhance learning, and engage community-minded businesses, families, and individuals in the success of Simi Valley students. Enhancement grants are provided for projects that will both innovate as well as equip teachers with the means to use inventive approaches for all stages of child development. Donations made by community members, alumni, local businesses, and from fundraising events make these grants possible.

One local educator is quoted on the Foundation's webpage as saying,

“With your grants we've been able to enhance the educational facilities and learning tools necessary to educate our students at a level we all strive to achieve. Thank you for helping make a valuable impact on our students”.

In addition to these grants, scholarships from the SVEF help to fund higher education for students who have demonstrated a desire to succeed. The intent of the scholarships, according to the Foundation, is to “offer an opportunity or turning point in a young person's life that inspires them to go on to be an asset to our community.” I firmly believe that one of the best ways to build a strong community is through education. The more young people we can encourage to embrace educational opportunities, the stronger our future will be!

Our Commitment to Education

From 1999 to 2001, I served as Board President of the Simi Valley Education Foundation, and I continue to support their work to this day.
